Abstract

The reactions of 1,1-diarylethenes or 1,1,6,6-tetraphenylhexa-1,5-diene with diethyl malonate in the presence of manganese triacetate dihydrate have been carried out. These reactions afforded mainly lactones of which structures were elucidated by spectrometric methods including HSQC and HMBC. This work showed that a relative complex compound such as 1-ethoxycarbonyl-8-diphenylmethylen-4,4-diphenyl-3-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]octan-2-one could be obtained by a simple route.
